WHAT CAME DOWN WHEN HE WENT UP
What Came Down When He Went Up
Text: Acts 1:9-11
"This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven." — Acts 1:11
Most Christians can tell you a great deal about Bethlehem. We know the story of the manger, the shepherds, the wise men, and the miraculous birth of Christ.
Many can also tell you about Calvary. We remember the crown of thorns, the nails, the cross, and the sacrifice Jesus made for our sins.
But there is one major event in the life of Christ that often receives far less attention—the Ascension.
Forty days after His resurrection, Jesus gathered His disciples on the Mount of Olives. After teaching and preparing them for the days ahead, He ascended back to the Father. The disciples watched until He disappeared into the clouds.
Imagine standing there that day. Three years of ministry had come to an end. Their Teacher, Leader, and Friend was gone. Questions filled their minds. What would happen next? How could they continue without Him?
Yet the story of Christ did not end at Bethlehem, Calvary, the empty tomb, or even the Ascension. In many ways, it was just beginning.
Today I want to consider this thought:
What Came Down When He Went Up?
When Jesus ascended to the Father, Heaven responded by sending several wonderful gifts to believers.
1. When He Went Up, The Spirit Came Down
Acts 2:33 reminds us that after Jesus was exalted to the Father's right hand, He sent the promised Holy Spirit.
Prior to Pentecost, the disciples knew God primarily in an external way. They walked with Jesus. They heard His teaching. They witnessed His miracles.
But after the Ascension, something changed.
The Spirit of God came to dwell within believers.
No longer would God's presence be limited to a location or a building. The Spirit would live inside every child of God.
Jesus said it was expedient for Him to go away because if He went to the Father, He would send the Comforter.
Instead of one Jesus ministering in one place at one time, the Spirit would empower believers around the world.
What an incredible truth!
We are never alone. We have God's Word, God's church, and God's Spirit living within us to guide, comfort, and strengthen us each day.
2. When He Went Up, Power Came Down
Acts 1:8 says:
"But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you."
The disciples were ordinary men. Fishermen. Tax collectors. Common laborers.
Throughout Christ's earthly ministry, they served under His power. They watched Him perform miracles. They followed His leadership.
But after the Ascension, they may have felt powerless.
How could they continue without Jesus physically beside them?
Then Pentecost came.
The Holy Spirit filled them with power.
Peter, who had once denied Christ, stood boldly and preached. Thousands were saved.
The early church grew despite fierce persecution. Believers stood firm in the face of imprisonment and death.
Why?
Because the power of God rested upon them.
The same power that transformed Peter is available to believers today.
You may feel insignificant. You may feel outnumbered at work, at school, or even in your own family.
But if you know Christ, the Spirit of God lives within you.
You have the power to witness, serve, teach, lead, and live for God's glory.
3. When He Went Up, Intercession Came Down
Romans 8:34 tells us that Christ now sits at the right hand of God making intercession for us.
Before Christ, people approached God through priests, sacrifices, and religious rituals.
But when Jesus completed His work on the cross and ascended to Heaven, everything changed.
The veil in the Temple was torn from top to bottom.
Access was granted.
Jesus became our Great High Priest.
Today, we can come boldly before the throne of grace because Christ intercedes on our behalf.
What makes this even more comforting is that Jesus understands us completely.
He knows sorrow.
He knows hunger.
He knows temptation.
He knows grief.
He knows pressure.
Hebrews tells us that He is touched with the feeling of our infirmities because He experienced life as we do.
When we pray, we are not speaking to someone who is distant and detached.
We are speaking to One who has walked where we walk and understands exactly what we face.
4. When He Went Up, Hope Came Down
The angels told the disciples:
"This same Jesus... shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven."
What a statement of hope!
Bethlehem gave us hope.
Calvary gave us hope.
The Resurrection gave us hope.
But the Ascension gave us a promise.
Jesus is coming again.
The disciples stood staring into the sky as Jesus disappeared into the clouds.
The angels essentially said, "Don't just stand here looking. He will come back. Now get to work."
That promise still encourages believers today.
One day Christ will return.
One day He will gather His children.
One day we will see our saved loved ones again.
One day faith will become sight.
One day sorrow, suffering, and death will be forever behind us.
The same Jesus who ascended from the Mount of Olives will return in power and glory.
What a hope we have!
Conclusion
When Jesus went up, He did not leave His followers empty-handed.
He sent His Spirit.
He gave His power.
He provides intercession.
He secured our hope.
Perhaps today you feel weak, discouraged, overwhelmed, or alone.
Remember that Jesus has not abandoned His people.
The Spirit of God lives within you.
The power of God is available to you.
The Son of God intercedes for you.
And the promise of God awaits you.
The countdown is getting lower every day.
One day the trumpet will sound.
One day the Lord Himself shall descend from Heaven.
The question is simple:
Will you be ready when He comes?
