BEWARE OF FALSE PROPHETS

Beware of False Prophets
Bible Text: Jeremiah 29:8-13
Introduction

We live in a day when opinions are plentiful and truth is often questioned. Social media gives everyone a platform, and many voices claim to have a new revelation, a better way, or a fresh interpretation of what God has said. Sadly, much of what is being promoted today is not leading people closer to Christ but farther away from the clear truths of Scripture.
Jeremiah faced a similar situation. While God's prophet, Jeremiah, warned the people that they would remain in Babylon for seventy years, a false prophet named Hananiah promised a quick and easy deliverance. The people had a choice: believe God's Word or believe the voice that told them what they wanted to hear.
The same choice confronts us today.

I. God's Word Can Be Trusted
Jeremiah 29:10
"For thus saith the LORD, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you..."
The people wanted immediate relief, but God promised deliverance in His timing. Hananiah offered a convenient message; Jeremiah delivered the truthful one.
Just as God fulfilled His promise to Israel exactly as He said, we can trust His Word today. The world continually asks, "Did God really say that?" Yet the believer must stand firmly on the authority of Scripture.
Key Truth: God's promises may not always come quickly, but they always come faithfully.

II. God Is Working on Your Behalf
Jeremiah 29:11
"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil..."
In uncertain times, God's people wondered if He had forgotten them. God reminded them that He was still working according to His plan.
This verse is often quoted at graduations and baby dedications, but its original audience was a discouraged people living in captivity. God wanted them to know that His plans had not changed.
Key Truth: God's delays are not God's denials. He is always working for our good and His glory.

III. God Hears Us When We Pray
Jeremiah 29:12
"Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you."
While they waited for God's promises to unfold, they were instructed to pray.
Prayer is not our last resort—it is our greatest resource. God promised that He would listen to His people and respond to their cries. Rather than searching for quick fixes or easy answers, we should take our burdens directly to the Lord.
Key Truth: God still hears the prayers of His people and works on their behalf.

IV. God Reveals Himself to Those Who Seek Him
Jeremiah 29:13
"And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart."
Many people desire God's blessings while giving Him only a portion of their hearts. Yet God promises to reveal Himself to those who sincerely seek Him.
This principle applies to salvation as well. True salvation is not found in merely repeating words or performing religious rituals. It is found when a sinner genuinely seeks Christ with a repentant and believing heart.
Key Truth: God reveals Himself to wholehearted seekers.

Conclusion
False prophets will always exist. Some openly deny God's truth, while others subtly distort it. Their message may sound appealing because it promises an easier path, but ultimately it leads people away from God's will.
The answer is not to chase every new teaching or trend. The answer is to remain grounded in God's Word, sensitive to His Spirit, faithful in prayer, and diligent in seeking Him.
In a world filled with competing voices, let us determine to trust what God has said rather than what others wish He had said.
Stay with the Book. Stay with the Spirit. Stay with the Truth.
