The Blessed Nation

Blessed Is the Nation
Scripture: Psalm 33:12

"Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance." — Psalm 33:12
As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our nation's founding, our hearts naturally turn toward gratitude for the many freedoms and blessings we enjoy as Americans. We live in a country with opportunities that many around the world can only dream about. We enjoy the freedom to worship, to own a Bible, to raise our families according to God's Word, and to openly proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
These blessings are not accidental. They are gifts from the hand of God.
Psalm 33 reminds us of a timeless truth:
"Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD."
This verse was originally written concerning Israel, yet the principle remains true for every people and every generation. God blesses those who acknowledge Him, honor Him, and submit themselves to His authority.

Not All Nations Are Spiritually Equal
Our world often teaches that every nation, every religion, and every god are essentially the same. Scripture teaches otherwise.
The psalmist didn't write, "Blessed is every nation." He wrote, "Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD."
There is only one true and living God—the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and the God revealed through Jesus Christ. While every person has the freedom to worship as they choose, the blessings promised in Scripture belong to those who acknowledge the Lord as God.
Throughout history, nations that rejected God eventually experienced decline, while those that honored Him enjoyed His favor and protection.
America has never been perfect, but our nation was undeniably influenced by biblical principles. Our founding documents acknowledge our Creator, our earliest leaders frequently called the nation to prayer, and generations before us understood that liberty was inseparable from our dependence upon God.

God Blesses Nations That Honor Him
The promise of Psalm 33 is simple:
God blesses nations that honor Him.
The blessings we enjoy are not merely the result of military strength, economic prosperity, or natural resources. They are ultimately the evidence of God's goodness.
Our Declaration of Independence reminds us that our rights come from our Creator, not from government. George Washington warned that no nation can expect the smile of Heaven while disregarding God's moral laws. Benjamin Franklin publicly acknowledged that God governs in the affairs of men.
Our nation's founders understood something we must never forget:
America's greatest strength has never been her wealth or her weapons. America's greatest strength has always been her dependence upon Almighty God.
As believers, we should desire God's blessing not only upon our nation, but also upon our churches, our homes, and our own lives. A church whose God is the Lord will experience His blessing. A family whose God is the Lord will know His guidance. A believer who walks with God will enjoy His peace.

God Can Remove His Blessing
While God's blessings are wonderful, Scripture also reminds us that they should never be taken for granted.
God sees every nation.
He observes every government.
He watches every individual.
Psalm 33 goes on to declare that "The LORD looketh from heaven; he beholdeth all the sons of men."
God keeps account.
History is filled with powerful nations that once flourished but later fell because they forsook the Lord. No nation—including America—is exempt from that reality.
Our confidence should never rest in our economy, our military, or our political system. Those things are important, but they cannot replace the blessing and protection of God.
The greatest danger America faces is not from outside enemies—it is from within, when we drift away from the God who has so richly blessed us.
Our Responsibility
It is easy to point fingers toward Washington, our schools, or our culture.
But Scripture reminds us that revival begins with God's people.
"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray..."
The future of our nation will not be determined solely by politicians. It will be influenced by Christians who faithfully pray, faithfully vote according to biblical convictions, faithfully worship, faithfully raise godly families, and faithfully proclaim the Gospel.
We cannot control every decision made in our nation, but we can determine who will be Lord of our own lives.

A Final Thought
I am thankful to be an American.
But even more than that, I am thankful to be a Christian.
Nations rise and fall. Kingdoms come and go. Yet our hope has never rested in earthly governments. Our hope rests in Jesus Christ.
As we celebrate our nation's heritage, let us also renew our commitment to the One who has blessed us so richly.
May God continue to bless America—not because we deserve it, but because His people continue to seek Him, honor Him, and proclaim His truth.
May we never forget:
"Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD."
