THE AWE OF HIM IN CREATION
Text: Psalm 33:6–9
Psalm 33:6–9
“By the word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.
He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the depth in storehouses.
Let all the earth fear the Lord: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.
For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.”
There are moments in life that simply cannot be explained—only experienced.
This past week, I watched one of the most beautiful sunsets I’ve ever seen. It was massive, vibrant, breathtaking. I could take a picture of it. I could try to describe it. But the truth is—you just had to be there.
Church can feel that way too.
You can watch it online. You can hear about it. But there are moments when God shows up in such a real way that words fall short. Moments where you don’t just attend—you stand in awe.
And that is what I fear we are losing.
In a world where church can become routine, preference-driven, and scheduled, we are in danger of losing the “wow”—the awe of God.
So for the next few weeks, I want us to focus on one theme:
The Awe of Him.
Today, we begin with this truth:
The Awe of His Creation
1. His Word Carries Absolute Authority
The psalmist reminds us:
“By the word of the Lord were the heavens made… For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.” (Psalm 33:6, 9)
God did not assemble the world from borrowed materials.
He didn’t gather parts.
He didn’t experiment.
He spoke—and it was.
Out of nothing, everything came into existence.
That means the same God who created the universe with His voice has the power to speak into your life.
When you face situations that seem impossible…
When you see no solution…
When it feels like nothing can be done…
Remember this:
Our God makes something out of nothing.
We must ask ourselves:
- Are we reading His Word?
- Are we trusting His Word?
- Are we obeying His Word?
2. His Power Is Beyond Comprehension
Isaiah 40:12
“Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?”
Isaiah paints a picture that stretches our understanding:
- God holds the oceans in His hand.
- He measures the heavens with His span.
- He knows every particle of dust on earth.
- He weighs mountains like we weigh small objects.
The same God who set the depth of the oceans…
The same God who determined the height of the mountains…
Is the God who knows your situation today.
Your problem is not bigger than God.
He does not need your strength, your wisdom, or your approval.
He is God all by Himself.
3. His Wisdom Is Self-Sufficient
Isaiah 40:13–14
“Who hath directed the Spirit of the Lord, or being his counsellor hath taught him?
With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding?”
Everything we know, we’ve learned from someone else.
But who taught God?
Who advised Him?
Who instructed Him?
Who gave Him wisdom?
No one.
God has never had an “aha” moment.
Nothing has ever occurred to Him.
He has never needed guidance—because He is perfect in knowledge.
And yet, we often treat Him as optional.
We give Him leftover time.
We fit Him into our schedule.
We neglect the very One who gives us breath.
If we would return to time in His Word…
Time in prayer…
Time in His presence…
We would rediscover the awe we’ve lost.
4. His Presence Makes Nations Small
Isaiah 40:15
“Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance…”
The nations of the world may seem powerful:
- Governments rise and fall
- Armies grow and threaten
- Leaders influence millions
They are a drop in a bucket.
They are dust on a scale.
God is not intimidated.
He sets up kings.
He removes kingdoms.
He rules over all.
And because of that:
We do not have to live in fear—we can live in awe.
Conclusion: Have You Lost Your Awe of Him?
Creation reminds us of one simple truth:
We are completely dependent on God.
You cannot breathe without Him.
You cannot live without Him.
You cannot succeed without Him.
And yet—this Creator desires a relationship with you.
Think about that.
The One who spoke the universe into existence…
Wants to walk with you.
Hear from you.
Be known by you.
Not because we deserve it—
But because of His grace.
So let me ask you:
- When was the last time you were overwhelmed by His goodness?
- When was the last time you worshipped Him without prompting?
- When was the last time you simply stood in awe?
Why not start today?
Give Him your life.
Give Him your burdens.
Give Him your everything.
Because the God who made everything from nothing…
Can do something incredible with you.
