WHY WE MUST PREACH CHRIST
We Preach Christ
Scripture: Mark 16:15
"And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." — Mark 16:15
The Church Has One Message
Before our Lord ascended back to heaven, He left His church with one clear assignment: preach the gospel. He did not commission us to entertain the world, argue philosophy, or build an earthly kingdom. He commanded us to take the good news of Jesus Christ to every person.
The gospel is far more than a message about Christ—it is the message of Christ. It declares who He is, what He accomplished through His death, burial, and resurrection, and what He freely offers to every sinner who will believe.
Churches may have many ministries and many opportunities to serve, but they have only one message that changes lives:
We preach Christ.
I. We Preach Christ to Reveal God's Grace
Acts 20:24
The Apostle Paul described his life's work as proclaiming "the gospel of the grace of God." There is no greater display of God's grace than the cross of Jesus Christ.
Grace is God's undeserved favor toward undeserving sinners.
We did not deserve Christ to leave heaven.
We did not deserve His sacrifice on Calvary.
We did not deserve forgiveness, mercy, or eternal life.
Yet God, because of His great love, provided salvation through His Son.
Every faithful sermon about Christ reveals:
II. We Preach Christ to Expose Man's Sin
2 Corinthians 5:21
Calvary reveals two great truths simultaneously: the holiness of God and the sinfulness of mankind.
Consider how humanity treated the only perfect man who ever lived.
They rejected Him.
They falsely accused Him.
They mocked Him.
They scourged Him.
They crowned Him with thorns.
They nailed Him to a cross.
They sealed His tomb believing they had silenced Him forever.
Nothing exposes the darkness of the human heart more clearly than the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. If sinful men would crucify the spotless Son of God, then our greatest problem is not ignorance—it is sin.
Yet this same passage also reveals the beauty of redemption. Christ willingly took our sin upon Himself so that all who trust Him might receive His righteousness.
The cross is where God's justice and God's grace meet.
Before a sinner will truly appreciate the Savior, he must first understand his need for salvation.
III. We Preach Christ to Glorify God
John 4:24
The purpose of biblical preaching is not merely to educate people—it is to glorify God.
God is honored whenever His truth is faithfully proclaimed.
In our day there are countless voices claiming to speak for God. Sincerity alone, however, is not enough. A person may sincerely believe something and still be sincerely wrong.
Error may attract attention.
Error may fill buildings.
Error may stir emotions.
But only the truth of God's Word brings glory to God.
When Christ is preached according to the Scriptures, God's holiness, justice, mercy, wisdom, love, and power are displayed before a watching world.
Our responsibility is never to make God's message more appealing by changing it. Our responsibility is simply to proclaim it clearly and faithfully.
IV. We Preach Christ to Exalt Christ
John 3:30
John the Baptist summarized every faithful ministry with these simple words:
"He must increase, but I must decrease."
That is the heartbeat of biblical preaching.
The world continually exalts human achievement, human wisdom, personal success, and self-confidence.
The gospel exalts none of those things.
The gospel exalts one Person—the Lord Jesus Christ.
A faithful preacher is not building his own platform or reputation. His calling is to point people away from himself and toward the Savior.
Every sermon ought to leave people thinking more about Jesus than about the preacher.
When Christ increases, the church fulfills its purpose.
V. We Preach Christ to Declare the Only Way of Salvation
2 Corinthians 4:3–4
Romans 1:16
The greatest need in our world is not political reform, economic prosperity, or social improvement.
The world's greatest need is salvation.
Paul reminds us that Satan has blinded the minds of unbelievers so they cannot see the glory of Christ. That is precisely why the gospel must continue to be preached.
No philosophy can save.
No denomination can save.
No amount of morality can save.
No collection of good works can save.
Only the gospel of Jesus Christ is "the power of God unto salvation."
The church has been entrusted with the only message that can rescue souls from eternal judgment.
If we truly believe Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven, then silence is not an option.
We preach Christ because eternity hangs in the balance.
Final Thoughts
The world has countless opinions, endless distractions, and temporary solutions, but its greatest need has never changed.
The world needs Christ.
That is why we preach Him.
We preach Christ because He reveals the grace of God.
We preach Christ because He exposes the reality of sin.
We preach Christ because His truth glorifies the Father.
We preach Christ because He alone deserves all honor and praise.
And we preach Christ because He alone has the power to save.
Paul captured the heartbeat of every Bible-believing church when he declared:
"But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness." — 1 Corinthians 1:23
May that always remain the mission of West End Baptist Church and of every faithful New Testament church until our Savior returns.
No substitute. No compromise. No other message.
We preach Christ.
